Helena
Paparizou, the 2005 edition winner, is the responsable for bringing the
European song fiesta to Greece. The 51st edition of the Eurovision Song
Contest is held in Athens, at the Olympic Indoor Hall, on 20th May 2006,
under the slogan "Feel The Rhythm". The host broadcaster is
ERT (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation), which also successfully broadcasted
worlwide the Olympic Games in 2004.
The hosts of the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens are Sakis Rouvas, a
very popular Greek singer, and Maria Menounos, an actress and television
presenter.
A cd/dvd was officially released, as well as a fan book containing information
of every participating country. The sub-logo design is based on the symbol
of ancient Greek Phaistos Disc.
ERT
has chosen Anna Vissi, maybe Greece's Madonna, to represent Greece in
the contest with the song "Everything", music Nikos Karvelas,
lyrics Anna Vissi.
Anna Vissi was born in Larnaca, Cyprus and moved to Greece at the age
of 16, to follow singing career. In 1980, she represented Greece, at the
25th Eurovision Song Contes, with the song "Autostop", and took
the13th place. In 1982, she represented Cyprus, at the 27th Eurovision
Song Contest, with song "Mono i Agapi" ("Only Love")
and ended 5th.
Anna Vissi holds the record for highest selling album in Greece and also
has a very successful international career. She sold over 9 millions copies
and her latest release is a double cd called "Nylon".
Greece has participated in Eurovision since 1974, having 28 appearances.
Greece won the first place in 2005, with the composition "My Number
One", performed by Helena Paparizou, music Hristos Dantis, lyrics
Hristos Dantis and Natalia Germanou. Greece obtained two times the 3rd
place, in 2001, with "Antique" (duo with Elena Paparizou) and,
in 2004, with Sakis Rouvas, this year competition presenter.
The heavy metal band "Lordi", from Finland, won the Eurovision
2006 Song Contest held in Athens. Congratulations "Hard Rock Hallelujah"!
